A Song: Companion’s Lament

I’m taking a songwriting course on Coursera with my #fakekid as a bonding/parenting thing. We have to do these assignments where we need to write verses, choruses, etc using the specific things taught in the week’s lesson: stable/unstable line lengths, number of lines, rhyme schemes, prechoruses, double meanings of words, placement of words in line for different emphasis, etc. I’m no songwriter, but I do find the exercise of doing the assignments and putting the different requirements together kind of fun, like a logic problem.

This week’s assignment required a verse and a chorus, and I needed to do it this morning to get it in under the deadline. Once I decided to do it as if it was a song about Doctor Who from the point of view of a companion singing like she was on Nashville (crossed with the Buffy musical episode), I went ahead and wrote the whole song. This conglomeration of elements *may* have been influenced by our conversation at the WordCamp San Diego afterparty last night. Blame Mika, Shredder, and Kevin. Without further ado:

Companion’s Lament

You swept me up,
Like a hero in a storyline.
Before I noticed,
I was traveling through space and time.

What kind of world
Is this that you are possible?
When we’re together,
I know we are unstoppable.

We saved a planet,
Stopped a war,
Killed a monster,
And so much more…

But when the blue box flies
Stone angels cry
People left behind
Always wonder why
(and what, where, when, and who)
So don’t you
Fly away without me

Playing Nurse to your Doctor
Has let me see the universe.
But sometimes I wonder
If this is just a patient curse.

I’m not the first,
And surely I won’t be the last.
But just how many girls
Are littered through your spacey past?

We saved a planet,
Stopped a war,
Killed a monster,
And so much more…

But when the blue box flies
Stone angels cry
People left behind
Always wonder why
(and what, where, when, and who)
So don’t you
Fly away without me

Will I be abandoned?
Consigned to boring normalcy
While you fly on,
A new girl soon replacing me.

We saved a planet,
Stopped a war,
Killed a monster,
And so much more…

But when the blue box flies
Stone angels cry
People left behind
Always wonder why
(and what, where, when, and who)
So don’t you
Fly away without me

Don’t you dare to
Fly away without me

I won’t let you
Fly away without me
